Vocational skills for underprivileged youth- Urban

SSTeP (SMILE TWIN e-LEARNING) was initiated in Aug 2015 in the eastern part of Kolkata, post an extensive survey conducted by Tomorrow’s Foundation. The programme aims to empower marginalized youth by enhancing their job prospects in the booming service and retail sectors through the provision of skill-based education in tandem with market requirements. Having successfully implemented the programme in the location of Tangra the project has been moved to Anwarshah road in the Tollygunj area. The project primarily aims at providing customized options of education and technical/professional training for youth within 18-25 years of age, who have dropped out from school or college. This initiative helps create a pool of well-trained adolescents for meeting market requirements. The training module is designed through an online platform and encompasses ITES, retail management and business management to ensure income generation for the adolescents after the completion of the course, along with grooming sessions such as spoken English and personality development. Recently the Indian retail and service sectors have been growing dramatically, but the country’s education infrastructure is insufficient to keep pace. SteP is a response to this inadequacy, delivering appropriate vocational and life skills. It is an opportunity for the youths, especially for the marginalized sections, in the broad context of sustainable development leading towards the alleviation of poverty, stabilization of population, gender equality and human rights. The students also get the opportunity to avail of the audio-visual training facilities which will enhance and accelerate the acquisition rate of knowledge and skills of the student.
