From taking care of her family - to taking care of her future
Alisha Quraishi is 18 years old and lives in the Park Circus area in Kolkata with her parents, two brothers and a sister.
Alisha’s father is a sick man and unable to work – so she has been the main breadwinner for the family for a long time. Her education stopped at Class 7 and she started to work in a beauty parlour to earn money for her family. During a community mobilisation initiative, a team from the Tomorrow’s Foundation Open School Programme met Alisha and realised that she was very keen to continue her education.
She was promptly enrolled in the Open School Programme and also given an opportunity to attend an additional vocational training course.
Alisha smiles as she recounts: “With the help of vocational training, I learned how to use a computer for the first time in my life. The English classes removed my fear about being able to mix with others as I could communicate better and did not feel shy or intimidated any more. My happiest moment was being able to pass the Class 10 Board exams in 2018 and get admission into Class 11 at the St. George Day School. “

"Inspite of having a financial crisis, I always wished to be a teacher in my life. The financial condition of my family didn't allow me to pursue any professional course but destiny changed when I became a part of Open School programme of Tomorrow’s Foundation in 2018" she says
Bhabna was successful in clearing the secondary examination & got enrolled in the skill training programme through Smile Twin E Learning Programme. At present she is preparing for senior secondary examination with an aspiration to fulfill her dream.

Soniya Baniya, 15 years old and a student of Class IX, lives in Chetla with her aunt. Her parents left her when she was a child. Her aunt took her responsibility, along with her own three children. Soniya is very intelligent and has been associated with TF from Class PP. She has been awarded All India 2nd position in Swachhata Hi Sewa poster competition. In an all NGO sports meet, she got prizes in all the events in which she participated. She is very passionate about her studies as well as painting and dreams of becoming a teacher and serve children who come from a background like hers.

Swapna Kumari Mirdha is a student of Class 7 in Bijoygarh Balika Vidyapith. Her home is in the slum area of Nanubabu Bazar, Tollygunge. Initially, Swapna was struggling to continue with her studies as it was difficult to cope and she was also over-age for her class. Her own refusal to give up coupled with family support and the Special Learning Centre’s bridge coaching – she started to make steady progress. Her self-confidence has improved and this has resulted in better motivation. Most importantly - her family appreciates the value of staying in school.

Lali is 19 years old and lives in a slum around Brace Bridge, which is regarded as an socio-economically backward area with its proximity to the docks and vulnerability to alcohol and drug abuse, sexual exploitation, trafficking and parental neglect of children and adolescents. “I was so happy to become a member of an Adolescent Group which found a voice for our rights. It was my mission to raise awareness against child marriage. Due to the vulnerability of girls to sexual exploitation, parents want to get their daughters married early and I was also a victim. Tomorrow’s Foundation trained me to conduct social awareness campaigns, street plays and community meetings against child marriage. I pointed to my own experience to show how a girl’s life can be ruined by not allowing her to continue her studies, and empowering her to work and stand on her own feet.” Lali is now a dedicated activist, and an example to her friends and peers. She along with the other members of the Adolescent Group created by the AFW Project has created enough social impact to change mindsets and behaviour in her community.

He has a history of convulsion with salivation problem. He belongs to a very poor family & both his parents suffer from severe heart disease. Initially Soumen could not speak properly neither had the power of understanding things but ever since he joined Tomorrow's Foundation, he has developed the ability to speak, communicate with others and follow instructions.

Debasish Das is a farmer from Semiat village of Birbhum district. His family consists of his parents and brother. He earlier used chemical pesticides and fertilisers on his land. After learning about the benefits of Shivansh Farming process, he has applied the same on his land and now growing 13 types of organic vegetables that are sufficient for his family’s consumption. Debasish is also motivating other farmers to apply this Shivansh Kheti process.

“My name is Iswarya and I am 21 years old. I have two daughters aged 5 and 3 years and an 18 month-old son. One of my daughters has stayed back in the village, so that she can go to school. I visit her every weekend and it is a 6-hour bus trip each way.
I dropped out of school when I was 16 to get married and before I joined LP4Y two months ago, I stayed at home to take care of my children. It was my husband who encouraged me to join LP4Y. I wake up at 5 am every day, prepare my husband’s lunch, clean my house, and then go to the LP4Y Centre with the two younger children who are taken care of at the LP4Y Nursery, Little Angel Academy.
LP4Y taught me how to use a computer for the first time in my life! The English lessons helped me more professional and confident about speaking in public. This was beyond my wildest dreams as I did not like English lessons in school – they were too difficult. My other fellow students are a good team and we get on well - we run a sports club for the community.
No one has ever worked as a teacher in our family. It means so much to me. LP4Y will help me get a good job and I look forward to making my family proud of me.”
