Health Project: PRA to understand occurrences of seasonal diseases in Kolkata slums

Our health team conducts monthly health checkups of all children who attend formal schools, evening coaching classes and community-based education centres. We have experienced most of the children are suffering from the seasonal diseases. To understand the phenomena of seasonal diseases we conducted PRA exercises are prepared seasonal diagrams of different diseases. The mothers from 4 slum areas and one village took part in these exercises. The exercises were lead by our team.

We have started training mothers from the slum locations on health issues so that they are able to take better care of themselves and their children. This is being done as part of our strategy to reduce seasonal diseases in the slum locations. TF Health Project is supported by People Bridge Foundation.

The 16th Annual General Body Meeting of Tomorrow's Foundation was held on 31st May, 2008 at TF Admin office. The meeting started at 2 PM and ended at 5.50 PM. This meeting was chaired by Ms. Ranju Ghosh, President.

The meeting started with a presentation by the Secretary Ms. Banerjea. In her presentation, Ms. Banerjea highlighted the following achievements:

Mother Project:


   1. The Corporation has renewed the permission for using the premises of DTMS
   2. Results Madhyamik - 9 out of 10 candidates passed
   3. Results Higher Secondary - 5 out of 5 candidates passed
   4. Graduation - 3 out of 3 candidates passed
   5. Renovation work - jointly completed by TF and DTMS
   6. One extra room has been provided by KMC for conducting evening classes

Community-Based Education Program:

   1. 463 students mainstreamed (REACH India Supported Program )
   2. 14 CBEP Centers re-opened with 369 children enrolled

Development of Adolescents Through Skill Development -Vocational Training:

   1. Worked with 100 adolescents
   2. Above 82 candidates completed their training
   3. 55 already placed in Job / Self-business
   4. Above 80 % of candidates achieved their next level of formal education (Madhyamik to H.S., H.S. to college level etc)

Open School   Madhyamik Level:

   1. 5 students were able to qualify in all subjects this year
   2. 17 students were able to qualify in 6 subjects each

Open School Higher Secondary Level:

   1. 2 students were able to qualify in all the papers of their Higher Secondary Exam and were admitted in College
   2. Enrollment - New students from Hossenpur area

Half Way Home:

   1. Served 63 students/ deprived children / adolescents in need
   2. License of home renewed by the Directorate of Social Welfare - Govt of W.B.

Hostels:

   1. 60 students were sponsored with hostel and other related educational facilities
   2. Started to work with a few new organizations which are providing hostel facilities to TF sponsored students

Sponsorship:


   1. Working with 55 students
   2. Working with new sponsor parents and children

Model School:

   1. 20 students were enrolled in the Model School.
   2. All students from last year got admission in different formal schools

Computer Literacy Program:

   1. 63 trainees continued to get training
   2. 18 completed the basic course

After the presentation of Ms. Anita Banerjea, the Chair requested Mr. Alokesh Sengupta to present the financial details of last year.

Mr. Sengupta presented the following details

Out of which total Grant Received for the year: 2280525.46  
Sponsorship Received: 992120.12  
General Donation: 3255237.00  
Income from sale of cards & other gift items: 838857.33  
Other Income: 453393.00  
Total expenses made out of total income earned: 7601745.29
Surplus made for the year: 218387.62

After the presentation by Mr. Sengupta, the draft Annual Report (2007-08) was circulated by the COO and all members unanimously accepted the same.
